July 17th, 2025: Today marks the 50th anniversary of some of the most significant handshakes in history. Two crews – one from the United States and one from the one Soviet Union – met in space on July 17th, 1975 as part of the Apollo-Soyuz Test Project (ASTP). The American crew consisted of Apollo astronauts Thomas Stafford, Vance Brand, and Donald “Deke” Slayton, and the Soviet crew was Aleksei Leonov and Veleri Kubasov. Our Apollo capsule rendezvoused with the Soyuz capsule after a series of burns. Rendezvous missions like this one are something in which Odyssey Space Research has extensive experience and expertise. Odyssey’s connection to the ASTP goes even deeper than that: Glynn Lunney, the father of Odyssey’s COO Bryan Lunney, was the Program Manager of the ASTP and an integral part of the NASA delegation to the Soviet Union. This historic mission paved the way for more US-Russia cooperation in space with the Shuttle-Mir and International Space Station programs.
